City 1, Derby County 0

Manchester City continued its fine start to the season with 1-0 victory over Derby County, through an excellent goal by teenager Michael Johnson, a product of the club’s academy.

Thaksin Shinawatra was introduced to the City home crowd by the PA announcer just before kickoff, on the occasion of his first home game since buying the club, drawing a loud cheer. After the game, Thaksin smiled and gave a wave to the crowd.

The goal scored by Johnson was the first by a City player in a home league game since New Year’s Day. This is relevant, because to make sense of the generally warm welcome Thaksin has received from City support, you have to grasp the ineptitude of the team’s peformances last term, especially in attack.

Next up for City: Manchester United on Sunday. Presumably Thaksin will be at the match, rather than in Thailand casting a vote in the constitutional referendum that same day.
